Apple's new Mac operating system, <a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/review/mac-software/mac-os-x-yosemite-first-look-review-3516686/" target="_blank" title="OS X Yosemite preview">OS X 10.10 Yosemite</a>,
has launched to the public. Here's everything you need to know about
Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite's price, system requirements and features, as
well as how to upgrade your Mac to OS X Yosemite and more. <br />
After unveiling OS X Yosemite during WWDC 2014 in June and releasing
it in beta form for developers and one million members of the public to
test, the final version of the operating system has been released for
all Mac users to download and install.<br />
Apple recapped some of the new features in Yosemite, including its
new design, new continuity features and app updates, during its 16
October keynote before revealing that it would be available to download
when the keynote ended (though it actually didn't arrive until a few
hours later, much to many Mac users' frustration). Also during the
keynote, Apple unveiled a <a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/review/mac-desktops/retina-imac-review-3581076/" target="_blank" title="Retina iMac review">Retina iMac</a>, a new <a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/review/mac-desktops/mac-mini-2014-review-new-features-spec-3474809/" target="_self" title="Mac mini 2014 review">Mac mini</a>, the<span style="background-color: transparent;"> </span><a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/review/ipad/ipad-air-2-first-review-3544035/" style="background-color: transparent;" target="_blank" title="iPad Air 2 review">iPad Air 2</a><span style="background-color: transparent;"> and an </span><a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/review/ipad/ipad-mini-3-review-3580343/" style="background-color: transparent;" target="_blank" title="iPad mini 3 review">iPad mini 3</a><span style="background-color: transparent;">.</span><br />
<h2>
OS X 10.10 Yosemite: How to get OS X Yosemite right now</h2>
As we mention above, Yosemite has officially launched to the public,
and any owner of a sufficiently powerful Mac can upgrade for free. Now
that someone in the Apple engine rooms has finally hit GO, here's how to
upgrade your to OS X Yosemite.<br />
Go to Apple's site, and find the Yosemite page. Here's a <a href="http://www.apple.com/uk/osx/" target="_blank" title="Apple's Yosemite page">direct link</a>. Scroll down a touch and click the blue Upgrade Now button. Follow the instructions in the Mac App Store.<br />
<br />
Yosemite will run on the following Macs:<br />

<h2>
Mac OS X Yosemite: Design & new features</h2>
Apple's senior vice president of design <a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/apple/apple-icons-no-4-sir-jony-ive-apples-x-factor-3494546/" target="_blank" title="Who is Jonathan Ive">Jonathan Ive</a> and senior
vice president of Software Engineering Craig Federighi have been
working together on the redesign of Mac OS X in the run up to the launch
of OS Yosemite. See: <a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/22-yosemite-icons-compared-with-their-mavericks-counterparts-3524145/" target="_blank" title="22 Yosemite icons compared with Mavericks">22 Yosemite icons compared with their Mavericks counterparts</a><br />
With Jony Ive's expanded design leadership reaching the software side
of Apple, we expected to see his influence prominently in the next Mac
OS X, and it looks like this is the case. The new operating system
certainly has a new look. See also: <a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/iphone/10-cool-new-features-in-photos-for-ios-8-mac-os-x-yosemite-3525732/" target="_blank" title="Photos for iOS 8 and Yosemite">10 new features in Photos for iOS 8 and Mac OS X Yosemite</a><br />
One of the biggest rumours was that OS X 10.10 would take a lot of
cues from iOS for a more similar interface. During the lauch event Apple
made various references to <a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/opinion/apple/how-yosemite-ios-8-are-evolving-be-device-independent-3524138/" target="_blank">Continuity</a>, with new features for integration with t<span style="background-color: transparent;">he iPhone. In many ways the Mac can become an extension of your iPhone - you will even be able to take calls on it</span><br />
<br />
Safari has a new streamlined design and a cleaner interface.<span style="background-color: transparent;">The
Tab View gives you an birds eye of your open tabs so it's easy to find
what you are looking for. It's possible to set up a window for Private
browsing, and when you search the results are no longer just limited to

<h2>
Siri for the Mac </h2>
Many expected Apple to make <a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/iphone/siri-troubleshooting-guide-10-worst-siri-annoyances-how-fix-them-3490680/" title="Siri troubleshooting guide">Siri</a> available on the Mac in OS X 10.9. <h2>
Control Centre</h2>
We were hoping Apple will decide to bring iOS 7's Control Centre to
OS X 10.10. It could revolutionise System Preferences and make them more
accessible for the less experienced user.<br />
<br />
<br />
Headline features are all well and good but it’s the little updates and tweaks that can turn using a new version of Mac OS X into a joyous experience. Below we look at some lesser-known tricks, tips, hints and hacks that might just make easier the transition from OS X Mavericks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.macworld.co.uk/cmsdata/slideshow/3582877/1spotlight_thumb800.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.macworld.co.uk/cmsdata/slideshow/3582877/1spotlight_thumb800.jpg" height="394" width="640" /></a></div>
Sticky Spotlight<br />
This might be a bug or it might be a feature but give a try and see what you think.<br />
<br />
When using Spotlight in Yosemite, you can right-click (or Ctrl+click) the Spotlight icon at the top right of the desktop to make the window stay on top and not disappear in the usual way when you click outside of it. This way you can grab as much info as you need without the fear of accidentally cancelling your search.<br />
<br />
The Spotlight icon will turn blue to indicate this new sticky mode (or grey if you use the Graphite colour scheme).<br />
<br />
Subsequently, the only way to make the Spotlight window disappear is to left-click the Spotlight icon. Or if that doesn't work, cmd-space again.<br />
<br />
Strangely, the Notifications icon at the top right will also turn blue if you right-click it, but this trick doesn’t work there — the Notifications area will still disappear when you click outside of it. Intriguing!<br />

Step 2 of 20: Network Disconnection<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.macworld.co.uk/cmsdata/slideshow/3582877/2wifi_thumb800.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.macworld.co.uk/cmsdata/slideshow/3582877/2wifi_thumb800.jpg" height="640" width="586" /></a></div>
Want to disconnect from a wireless network? Prior to Yosemite this was a bit of a hassle involving either switching off Wi-Fi entirely, or delving into System Preferences.<br />
<br />
On Yosemite all you need do is hold down Alt (or Option on some keyboards) and click the Wi-Fi icon at the top right of the screen. Beneath the name of the currently in-use Wi-Fi base station will be a disconnect option. (This option also appears when you connect to an iPhone/iPad via Personal Hotspot, although in this case there’s no need to hold down Alt/Option because it appears in the main menu.)<br />
Recording output<br />

Before we begin, don't panic: Apple's OS teams are likely working hard to address any generalized system glitches identified since launch. A future Apple update will address most widespread problems, meanwhile there are a few steps you can take to figure out what's slowing you down.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">

<strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Note:</strong> Many users like to create a bootable OS X disk on a flash drive. You can use this to launch from external storage. </div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">

Run Software Update after you've installed Mavericks. You should do this to ensure all your Apple software is now running the latest edition. You should also apply all App updates available via the Mac App Store.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Check your apps</strong></div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Not every application on your system will come from the App Store. This means it is possible a rogue third-party app is eating system performance. One quick way to find out if your apps are Mavericks-compatible is to take a look at the Roaringapps Application Compatibility list. It makes sense to avoid using incompatible applications until they are upgraded for the OS.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">The big four: R, S, C, A</strong></div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to run a healthy Mac. Now you've updated your system and its apps, please take the following steps:</div>
<blockquote style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border-left-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-left-style: solid; border-width: 0px 0px 0px 4px; color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin: 15px 0px; outline: 0px; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px 0px 0px 20px; quotes: none;">

OS X will rebuild the Spotlight index after a major System upgrade. The process takes time and degrades performance while it takes place.</div>
<div style="background: transparent; border: 0px; color: #333333; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Click on the Spotlight (looking glass) icon to the top right of the display to see if indexing is taking place. If indexing is in progress you should see a dot in the middle of the looking glass icon and/or be told the operation is taking place. Allow the process to complete and you should see immediate performance improvement.</div>

<div style="background: transparent; border: 0px; color: #333333; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
If things still seem slow, launch Console and Activity Monitor (both available in Utilities).</div>
<div style="background: transparent; border: 0px; color: #333333; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Activity Monitor will show you those apps using the most memory (usual culprits are Mail and Safari).</div>
<div style="background: transparent; border: 0px; color: #333333; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Console offers a more complex series of system events.</div>
<div style="background: transparent; border: 0px; color: #333333; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Between the two you should be able to figure out if one of your applications isn't running efficiently -- watch for apps leaving inordinate numbers of messages in Console, or those that quickly use large amounts of Memory in Activity Monitor.</div>

There are several standard steps that generally improve Mac performance.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<em style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Increase memory</em>: put more RAM in your Mac</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<em style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Free your memory</em>: Use the award-winning Memory Clean app (free) to free up your existing RAM.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<em style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Check for space</em>: OS X likes to create temporary files on the drive in normal use but in order to do so it requires you keep at least 10% of existing drive space free. Being unable to create these files will degrade system performance.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
There's numerous additional steps you can take to improve your Mavericks Mac performance. I'll take a look at several Mavericks-specific ones later on, for example, it may be worth reducing the number of automatic Notifications you receive.</div>

OS X Mavericks, iOS 7: Text Shortcuts explained</h1>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px;">Mavericks and iOS 7 let you use the same Shortcuts for text entry on your Mac as on your mobile device. Here's how to enable and use the feature.<br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://blogs.computerworld.com/sites/computerworld.com/files/u175/os_x_mavericks_ios_7-_text_shortcuts_explained.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://blogs.computerworld.com/sites/computerworld.com/files/u175/os_x_mavericks_ios_7-_text_shortcuts_explained.png" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Enabling Shortcuts</strong></div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
You've been able to sync your text shortcuts between devices since iOS 6, with Mavericks your Mac will also use (and share) these text shortcuts. </div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
To enable this feature on your Mac simply launch System Preferences, open iCloud prefs and check the Documents & Data setting.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
To enable your iOS device, open Settings>iCloud, and check the Documents and Data toggle switch to green (active).</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
In future any shortcut you set on your iPhone or iPad will work on your Mac, and vice versa. Delete a shortcut on one system and it will be deleted across your others.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Creating Shortcuts (iOS)</strong></div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
You can create new shortcuts on iOS within Settings>General>Keyboard and tap Shortcuts at the bottom of the screen.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Your iOS systems probably already have one shortcut set up, "omw", type this and your device will write "On My Way".</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
To add a shortcut tap the blue + (Plus) button at top right of the Shortcuts screen. You'll be asked to enter the Phrase you want to use in the Phrase box and a shortcut for that phrase in the Shortcut field. Save your new Shortcut and in future whenever you type those letters on your Mac or mobile device your chosen phrase will appear.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
To delete a shortcut press the blue Edit button on the lower left corner of your device, you can then delete any shortcuts you no longer need. Those changes will be applied across all your enabled systems (Mac or iOS device).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://blogs.computerworld.com/sites/computerworld.com/files/u175/os_x_mavericks_ios_7_text_shortcuts_2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://blogs.computerworld.com/sites/computerworld.com/files/u175/os_x_mavericks_ios_7_text_shortcuts_2.png" height="363" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Creating Shortcuts (Mavericks)</strong></div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
You control Shortcuts on Mavericks systems inside System Preferences. Select Keyboard and select the 'Text' tab at the top of the pane. Mavericks systems usually have some common fractions (½, ¾, ¼) already set-up.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
To create a new shortcut press the + button in the lower left corner, in the main pane you will see two editable fields appear, Replace and With.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Type the shortcut you intend using in the Replace box and type the word or phrase you intend using in the With box. Then hit Return.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
The new shortcut is now available on all your systems.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
To delete a shortcut select it and press the - button.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Using shortcuts</strong></div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
To use a Shortcut on iOS, just type the letters and the shortcut should pop up in your Autocorrect box. Press space after you enter the letters and your device will use the shortcut.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
To use a shortcut on Mavericks, just type the shortcut's letters and the full phrase should appear in autocorrect. To use that shortcut press the spacebar and write something else. If you don’t want to use the shortcut on a Mac you must either press the small X beside the suggestion in autocorrect (which is bit fiddly) or press the Escape key on your keyboard (easiest method).</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Limitations of shortcuts</strong></div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
There's some ways in which Apple could improve shortcuts. For example, when you don't want to invoke any shortcuts on your iOS device, it would be nice if you could tell Siri to deactivate the feature on your device for a set period. Some users will use shortcuts to automatically fix mistakes made by autocorrect when writing technical terms, slang expressions or names.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
I hope you find shortcuts useful.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">

With iOS 7, Apple has introduced the possibility for third-party developers to support custom shortcuts with external (Bluetooth) keyboards in their apps. Keyboard shortcuts, longtime favorites of OS X power users, can now be enabled in iOS apps and, in the past few months, we've seen some notable examples such as <a href="http://www.macstories.net/reviews/omnioutliner-2-refined-for-ios-7-now-with-external-keyboard-support/" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #b00a0f; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: none;" title="OmniOutliner 2: Refined for iOS 7, Now With External Keyboard Support">OmniOutliner by The Omni Group adding support</a>for this feature.<span id="fnref1" style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 0; position: relative; top: -0.5em; vertical-align: baseline;"><a href="http://www.macstories.net/tutorials/a-list-of-new-ios-7-keyboard-shortcuts/#fn1" rel="footnote" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #b00a0f; font-weight: 600; position: relative; text-decoration: none;">1</a></span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1.125em; height: auto; line-height: 1.5; margin: 1rem auto; max-width: 90%; padding: 0px; width: 700px;">
Apple itself has been experimenting with keyboard shortcuts in built-in iOS 7 apps, and I thought I'd provide a list of the ones that I've found to be working on iOS 7.0.3 with my iPad mini and a <a href="http://www.macstories.net/reviews/review-logitech-tablet-keyboard-for-ipad/" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #b00a0f; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: none;" title="Review: Logitech Tablet Keyboard for iPad">Logitech tablet keyboard</a> due to the lack of official documentation. This list was inspired by <a href="http://the.taoofmac.com/space/blog/2013/09/19/0900#first-impressions-of-ios-7-for-keyboard-power-users" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #b00a0f; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: none;" title="First Impressions of iOS 7 for Keyboard Power Users - Tao of Mac">Rui Carmo</a>, who first found out about keyboard shortcuts in Safari for iOS 7. Since Rui's post (and <a href="http://www.macstories.net/linked/ios-7-for-keyboard-power-users/" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #b00a0f; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: none;" title="iOS 7 For Keyboard Power Users">my link to it</a>), the issues with the Logitech keyboard that he described have been fixed (the Spotlight key works on iOS 7.0.3) and I've collected some new shortcuts.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1.125em; height: auto; line-height: 1.5; margin: 1rem auto; max-width: 90%; padding: 0px; width: 700px;">
Right now, new keyboard shortcuts have only been added to Safari, Mail, and Pages in a very limited fashion. While they are consistent with their OS X counterparts, Apple has only brought a few of the Mac's shortcuts to its iOS 7 apps, leaving other apps like Messages or Reminders without shortcut support. It's likely that, with time, Apple will bring more shortcuts to Safari, Mail, and other stock apps. I couldn't find official documentation on Apple's website and I've tested every possible shortcut with a simple trial and error procedure on my iPad.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1.125em; height: auto; line-height: 1.5; margin: 1rem auto; max-width: 90%; padding: 0px; width: 700px;">
<span style="font-weight: 600;">I will update this list regularly</span> as Apple adds more keyboard shortcuts to its iOS apps. If you have discovered other keyboard shortcuts that are new to iOS 7 and haven't been mentioned here, please <a href="https://twitter.com/viticci" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #b00a0f; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: none;" title="Twitter">ping me on Twitter</a> or <a href="mailto:viticci@macstories.net%22" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #b00a0f; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: none;">send me an email</a>.</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">10 Useful Apps To Recover A Lost Or Stolen I-Phone :</span></h1>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">For starters, you will lose all your precious data: music, photos, apps and contacts. Getting a new phone would mean you have to start recollecting all these items from scratch. If hearing that gives you a headache, let me remind you that the person who has located your iPhone will also have access to all your online accounts: social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, personal emails — and if you are one of the many people who do their banking online, better change those passwords quick. In any case, identity theft has been made easier these days since your smartphone now carries your<em style="border: 0px; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> online identity</em>.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">While it is almost impossible to prevent you from dropping or misplacing your iPhone, it is possible to reduce the effects (and pain) of losing your iPhone and the contents within forever. Here are 10 useful apps (3 of them with step-by-step guides on how to use them) which can help you turn the tables in the event of your iPhone going MIA.</span></div>

However two features of the new iCloud service could cause big problems for anyone cheating or otherwise doing things they might not ought to be doing.</div>

One of the most ballyhoo'd features of iCloud is <em>Photo Stream</em>. <em>With iCloud, when you take a photo on one device, it automatically appears on all your other devices. No syncing. No sending. Your photos are just there. Everywhere you want them.</em></div>

A photo taken on your iPhone at the bar at 2am will near-instantly appear on your computer at home or on the iPhone of your spouse trying to text-message you asking what you're doing</div>

You read that right: Once you take a picture, it will automatically be added into your Photo Stream and once that happens <em>you cannot delete it</em>. Every pictures is stored on the Photo Stream for 30 days, or until you take over 1000 pictures, whichever comes first.</div>

<b>Difficulty: </b>Easy</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-size: 12px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
<b>Time Required: </b>A minute or less</div>
<h3 style="color: #333333; font-size: 12px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
Here's How:</h3>
<ol style="color: #333333; font-size: 12px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-decoration: inherit; z-index: 0;">
<li style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; list-style-type: decimal; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 30px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;"><div style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
As noted above, you need to have set up Find My iPhone on your device prior to it getting lost or stolen. If you did, go to <a href="https://www.icloud.com/" style="color: #3366cc; cursor: pointer; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" target="_blank" zt="-o1/XJ">https://www.icloud.com/</a> in your web browser (there's also <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-iphone/id376101648?mt=8&uo=4&at=11l9Do" style="color: #3366cc; cursor: pointer; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" target="_blank" zt="-o1/XJ">a Find My iPhone app</a> [opens iTunes link] that you can install on another iOS device to track it. You don't need the app; it's simply another option. <b>These instructions are for using the web-based tool</b>).</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
Log in using the account you used when setting up Find My iPhone. This is likely your Apple ID/iTunes account.</div>
</li>
<li style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; list-style-type: decimal; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 30px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;"><div style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
When you log in, Find My iPhone will immediately begin trying to locate your device. You'll see onscreen messages as it works. If the device is turned off, the map will display its last known location, not necessarily its current location. When it's turned back on, the map will update.</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
If it finds your device, it will zoom in on the map and show the location of the device using a green dot. When this happens, you can zoom in or out of the map, and view it in map, satellite, and hybrid modes, like in Google Maps.</div>
</li>
<li style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; list-style-type: decimal; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 30px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;"><div style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
When your device is found, a window will pop up over the green dot (if it disappears because you clicked elsewhere on the page, just click the green dot again to get it back). Click the window and you'll see the various options you have.</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
The first option is to have it play a sound. Sending a sound to the device is best when you think you've misplaced your device in the house or office and want help finding it. It can also be helpful if you think you know where a device may be, but someone is denying it. To do this, click <b>Play Sound</b>.</div>
</li>
<li style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; list-style-type: decimal; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 30px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;"><div style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
You can also click the <b>Lost Mode</b> button. This will allow you to remotely lock the device's screen and set a passcode (even if you hadn't previously <a href="http://ipod.about.com/od/iphonetroubleshooting/a/iphone-security.htm" style="color: #3366cc; cursor: pointer; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">used a passcode</a>) that will prevent the thief from using your device or accessing your personal data.</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
To do this, click the <b>Lost Mode</b> button and enter the 4-digit lock code you want to use twice. You can then also enter a phone number where the person who has the device can reach you (this is optional; you may not want to share this information if it's been stolen). You can also, optionally, write a message that will be displayed on the device's screen. When you're ready, click <b>Done</b> and your device will now be inaccessible to the thief unless they guess your code.</div>
</li>
<li style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; list-style-type: decimal; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 30px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;"><div style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: inherit;">For even greater security, you can also remotely delete all data from the device. To do this, click the </span><b style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; text-decoration: inherit;">Erase</b><span style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: inherit;"> button. There, you'll see a warning (basically, don't do this unless you're absolutely sure you want to). Click the box that says you understand what you're doing and click the </span><b style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; text-decoration: inherit;">Erase</b><span style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: inherit;"> button. This will delete all your data, preventing the thief from accessing it.</span></div>
</li>

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: inherit;">If you get the device back, you can </span><a href="http://ipod.about.com/od/iphonetroubleshooting/ss/restore-iphone.htm" style="color: #3366cc; cursor: pointer; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">restore your data from backup</a><span style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: inherit;">.</span></div>
</li>

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: inherit;">If you think your device is on the move, click the target icon at the top left corner of the screen to refresh and get a new fix on your device's location.</span></div>
</li>
<li style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; list-style-type: decimal; margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 30px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;"><div style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: inherit;">If you have more than one device configured to use Find My iPhone with this account, you'll see a menu called </span><b style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; text-decoration: inherit;">Devices</b><span style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration: inherit;"> in the top left corner. First generation iPhones will provide slightly-less accurate location information due to the lack of a GPS chip, and must be in range of cell towers. Also works on iPod Touch but only if wireless is enabled and the device is in-range of a wireless network</li>

That's all there is too it! There are other, cheaper ways to track an iPhone but they require jailbreaking and the person with the iPhone must first run a specific application on the phone, and are just not as simple or 'fool proof' as this method. This method requires only a minute to setup and does not require you to do anything on the iPhone once configured. </div>

Every day people suffer data loss on Mac products due to hardware failures, accidentally formatting the wrong volume of a drive, software corruption, viruses, and simply deleting files by mistake. In any of these situations, Mac users don’t have to throw up their hands and resign themselves to the loss of important data and files. Stellar Mac Recovery is a utility that allows users recover mac files that may have been lost by any of the means listed above.<span id="more-1205"></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">

We had the opportunity to test drive Stellar Phoenix’s software suite, Mac Data Recovery. We’ve tested various Mac recovery software in the past claiming to achieve recovery under the circumstances listed by Stellar Phoenix, and our experiences have been less than consistent. With that in mind we set up a couple of tests to evaluate how well Mac Data Recovery from hardware failure and corruption related issues. We were very pleased with the results.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">

<strong>Failed Partition</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">
<br class="spacer_" /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">
We setup a test to evaluate how well Stellar Phoenix’s Mac Data Recovery was able to recover Apple files from a failed partition. To do this we placed a couple of files on a drive and then botched the partition attempt. Under normal use the files weren’t accessible or found. We then launched Mac Data Recovery and were presented with the option of scanning for volumes, create image, and raw data recovery. We selected raw data recovery and the software immediately started populating a list of files in the botched partition. Amongst those files were the planted files we were looking for!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">
<br class="spacer_" /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">
<strong>Reformatted Drive</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">
<br class="spacer_" /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Next we tested how well the software copes with recovering Mac data from an accidentally reformatted drive. We selected the scan volume option and immediately folders were recovered. Macintosh Data Recovery then runs a more detailed search that outputs the found data to the OS X data structure. After going to digging through the folder hierarchy, I was able to find my test files. While this test took a little time, one must realize that the test is looking through the entire volume as opposed to searching for individual files. Mac Data Recovery accomplished this task in what we would consider to be a standard amount of time.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">
<strong>Conclusion</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5a5a59; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17.33333396911621px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Stellar Phoenix’s Mac Data Recovery program has received awards and accolades from Macworld, Bright Hub, MyMac Magazine, and Silicon Mountain Users Group. It is known through tech circles as one of the best Macintosh data recovery software out there. <h1 itemprop="name" style="color: #1e1e31; font-family: Merriweather, serif; font-size: 42px; font-weight: 300; line-height: 1.2em; margin: 5px 0px 15px;">
OS X Mavericks tips and tricks: Here's what your Mac can do now :</h1>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">Compiled a list of dozens of tips for you to get the most out of the new features Apple has added to OS X Mavericks. In some instances, the changes can be tricky to find, but once you find them, your workflow can quickly change for the better. Some are new, some you might know already, but we can promise this: all will help you get more out of your laptop or desktop.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/r/s/728x/assets/images/phpiewqyn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/r/s/728x/assets/images/phpiewqyn.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Automatically check for updates</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
You can now turn automatic app update checks on rather than having to manually go and check to see if your favourite app has been updated.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Download and install app updates</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Once you've checked them you can also have Mavericks download the update in the background and if you want to go one step further you can have it install the update for you too.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Automatically download apps purchased on other Macs</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Got more than one Mac in your house? Of course you have. Now just like iOS 7 you can have any Mac purchases you make automatically download on all your Macs rather than just the one you are buying it on. Go to System Preferences > App store and tick the relevant box.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Disable app updates</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
If all this automatic downloading and updating sounds a bit to heavy handed for your liking you can turn it off. System Preferences > App Store and tick what you don't want.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Allow apps downloaded from anywhere</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
By default Apple stops you downloading every app available to help protect your computer from nefarious sources. To throw caution to the wind go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General and tick whether you want apps only from the Mac App Store, identified developers or anywhere. It's a feature that's been available for sometime but with a new instal it's worth noting where it is in case you want to change the settings with your new set-up.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Delaying updates</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
You now have the ability to delay updates if a restart is required for an update. You can now choose to either perform a Restart immediately, or choose an option like “Try in an Hour,” “Try Tonight,” or “Remind Me Tomorrow.”</div>
<h3 style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; line-height: 24px;">
Notifications </h3>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/r/s/728x/assets/images/phpmpjxvc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/r/s/728x/assets/images/phpmpjxvc.jpg" height="293" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Keep them off the Lock Screen</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Just like iOS 7 you can see what notifications you've got while your computer is locked with the password. Mavericks gives you a summary of your notifications but this might let other people see how busy you've been or in the case of website push notifications what sites you read. To turn this feature off go to System Preferences > Notifications and select the apps in Notification Center that you don't want to show on the lock screen. In each instance there will be a "Show notifications on lock screen" option. Untick the box.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Hide share buttons in Notification Center</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Notification Center shows you all all the notifications you are getting on your computer and can be revealed by a two-finger swipe from the edge of your trackpad (right to left). Within the Notification Center you can now iMessage, tweet, or write a Facebook status update. If you don't want to do this you can turn it off by going to System Preferences > Notifications and untick the Share Buttons option.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Sort Notifications by time</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
System Preferences > Notifications and then in the bottom left hand corner of the box select whether to "Sort Notification Center" by time or manually.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Do Not Disturb</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
If you've got work to do then the constant barrage of messages, alerts and other stuff can be annoying. Like before you can turn it off, either manually or a set time every day.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Do Not Disturb when mirroring to TVs and projectors</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Tick this box and when you are doing a presentation you won't get a message from your partner asking you to wear something sexy later (as if that ever happens anyway).</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>But allow FaceTime calls</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Apple clearly thinks getting a FaceTime call is important, more so above and beyond anything else as you can override Do Not Disturb settings by allowing Everyone or just Favourites to interrupt you. You can also set it to Allow just repeated calls although by that point they are probably calling your mobile to tell you that your cat is dead.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Turn on Do Not Disturb without going to System Preferences</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Open Notification Center on the desktop and scroll down. The Do Not Disturb option will appear.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Send iMessages in Notifications Center</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Two-finger swipe on your trackpad or press the list icon in the top right of your screen in the menu bar and then press on the speech bubbles.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Replying to interactive bubbles</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Every time you get a notification an interactive bubble appears at the top right hand side of your screen. You can automatically reply to any message you get by hovering over the bubble and then pressing the Reply button.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Deleting Mail via interactive bubbles</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
For Mail notifications you can also delete them without even looking at your inbox.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; line-height: 24px;">
General</h3>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/r/s/728x/assets/images/phpmsuaqu.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/r/s/728x/assets/images/phpmsuaqu.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Guest user</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
It's an old one, but still a handy one. Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups and set up a Guest User account. Now when people need to borrow your computer for something (if you are being nice) you don't have to worry about sharing your information, but also if your Mac stars acting funny you can see if its something you are running or whether it's the computer.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Setting your Face as your login picture</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
In Mavericks rather than just letting you choose a picture that is of a penguin or an owl, or take a picture with your build in camera, you now have a lot more options like iCloud, Faces, and Linked images from your social networks.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups and then click on the picture you currently have. The options are now much more expansive.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Turn on offline dictation</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Mountain Lion featured the ability to talk to your computer and then it type what you say, but the problem was, was that it needed you to be online for it to work. Now you can use it offline. Hidden in System Preferences > Dictation & Speech > Dictation is a tick box titled "Use Enhanced Dictation". Ticking this box lets you use the service offline and offers continuous dictation with live feedback. It will require 491MB of storage space though.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Launchpad sparkles</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
A little UI feature Apple added to Launchpad in Mavericks is a sparkly star animation that briefly appears around a newly download app’s icon. If you've got new apps, that's why they've got sparkles around it. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Adding LinkedIn contacts</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
You can now add profile pictures and LinkedIn contact detail to your contacts. Go to System Preferences > Internet Accounts > and add your LinkedIn details. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Checking your battery condition </strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Hover over the battery icon in the menu bar and press alt as you click it to view your battery’s condition.</div>

<strong>Multiple screen support with Apple TV</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
You can now use an Apple TV connected to an HD TV and treat it as a completely separate screen rather than just mirror it as you could do in Mountain Lion. To do this make sure the Apple TV and Mac are one the same network and then click on the square icon with a triangle in it on the menu bar at the top of the desktop. Select your Apple TV and start sharing.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Managing multiple displays</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
On the Menu Bar go to Apple logo > System Preferences > Display > Arrangement and drag the secondary screen where you want it in relation to your Mac screen</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Displays have separate Spaces</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
New displays have a separate window in Mavericks, something that is very much welcomed, but some people no doubt will find that annoying. To turn it off go to System Preferences > Mission Control and untick "Displays have separate Spaces". It will require a reboot, but then things will be back to normal.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">

<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Rearrange Top Sites </strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
You can rearrange the top site order on the first page of Safari quickly and easily. To rearrange the pages simply click and drag them to where you want them to be on the page. To delete them press the "X" in the top left corner and to pin them in position so they are always the top site click on the pin icon. If you want to get to this page quickly either press Option + Command + 1 or click on the grid of square icons next to the open book on the favourites bar. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Add webpages to your Reading list</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Adding webpages to your reading list has got even faster in Mavericks. Now just press the big "+" symbol next to the URL address bar and it's automatically added and synced across your iCloud devices.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Shared Links tab</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
New to Safari in Mavericks is a Shared Links tab that allows you to quickly see what links people are talking about in Twitter and Facebook (if you've logged into those social networks). Click on the open book icon in the favourites bar in Safari and then go to Shared Links to see what your friends are talking about.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Getting to Bookmarks quickly</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
You can now access your bookmarks and manage them quickly without having to go to a menu bar option. Click on the open book icon in the favourites bar in Safari and see the bookmarks you've got.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Show all or unread Reading List saves</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Click on the open book > Reading List and then scroll downward to reveal an All / Unread toggle switch.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Search Reading List</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Click on the open book > Reading List and then scroll downward to reveal search box.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>See which plug-ins are running</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Go to Safari > Preferences > Security > Manage Website settings. From here you can see what plug-ins are running and what you want to stop or disable.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Blocking Flash Player or Reader</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
Go to Safari > Preferences > Security > Manage Website settings and then select Adobe Flash Player to see what sites you have open are currently running Flash Player. You can then Ask, Allow, Block, or Always Allow individual sites or just blanket cover all of them. You can apply these rules to Reader as well so that it always asks before giving you access to the pdf you are wanting.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Adding Credit Card details</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
If you are a heavy online shopper you can add your credit card details to Safari to save you having to type them in over and over again. To do this go to Safari > Preferences > Autofill and then edit. Apple lets you store multiple credit cards that can then be easily called when the form requires it.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Turn off preloading Top hit in background</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
To speed up search results Safari preloads your Top Hit when you search for anything via the address bar. To turn this off to save data if you are on the road, go to Safari > Preferences > Privacy and click on the "Do not preload Top Hit in the background" option.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
<strong>Turning off Safari Push Notifications in Notification Center</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">
If you've said yes to a website that is using the new Push Notifications you can turn them off by going to Safari > Preferences > Notifications and press Remove on the one you want to ditch.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">

<span style="font-size: large;">Few Other <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; letter-spacing: -1px; line-height: 1em;">amazing tricks to learn on your Mac</span></span><br />

1. Endless keyboard shortcuts</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 480px;">
The mouse is great and all, but don't be afraid to favour keyboard shortcuts instead of a series of clicks (don't worry, it won't get jealous). The developers have put in tons of keyboard shortcuts that will help you save time, and here's the best part: you can create your own custom ones too, for any of your commonly used menu options. Just go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Application Shortcuts and then pick your own selection of keys to replace the tiresome journey the cursor would have otherwise made.</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; letter-spacing: -0.5px; line-height: 1em; margin: 20px 0px 10px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 480px;">
2. Everything ready at log-in</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 480px;">
Everyone's got their own set of 'evergreen' apps – those that are constantly open whenever they fire up their Mac, regardless of the activity they might have planned. Wouldn't it be great if said selection of apps automatically opened every time you switched on your computer? You can guess where this is going, can't you? That's right, the options await at System Preferences: select yourself from Accounts, and then visit Login Items.</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; letter-spacing: -0.5px; line-height: 1em; margin: 20px 0px 10px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 480px;">
3. Connect to the internet through your iPhone</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 480px;">
Got an iPhone to accompany your Mac? Your mobile device comes with a feature that enables it to share its 3G or 4G mobile broadband connection with other devices (though this must be allowed by your network operator), making it perfect for getting your Mac online wherever you are. You can share the signal through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB. First turn on the iPhone's Personal Hotspot option in Settings. Then you can either pair them both over Bluetooth, manually connect them using a USB or select the Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone in the Mac's Wi-Fi options and enter the password.</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; letter-spacing: -0.5px; line-height: 1em; margin: 20px 0px 10px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 480px;">
4. Sign here, here and here</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 480px;">
There's no need to feel restricted while using a Mac. Need to add a signature to an important document? Not a problem: in OS X 10.7 and later you can do exactly that using Preview. Within Preview's Preferences, go to the Signatures tab and then click on the +. Scrawl your name in black ink on white paper, hold it up to your Mac's webcam, line it up and click Accept. Make sure you save it so you can use it again in the future, whether it's for writing letters or answering fanmail…</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; letter-spacing: -0.5px; line-height: 1em; margin: 20px 0px 10px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 480px;">
5. Record screencasts</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 480px;">
Question: what's the best way to record a problem you're experiencing on screen or to make an instructional video demonstrating the use of an app? Answer: record a video of your screen – after all, that'd be the most useful if you were on the receiving end, right? You can do so through QuickTime Player. In File > New Screen Recording you can chose the audio source and even whether or not to include the mouse clicks in the recording! To neaten any rough edges, you can tweak it in iMovie, and then upload it to YouTube or AirDrop it to say, a relative's Mac.</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; letter-spacing: -0.5px; line-height: 1em; margin: 20px 0px 10px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 480px;">
6. See the hidden options</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 480px;">
It can be infuriating when trying to locate the right menu path, but not on the Mac's watch. Holding down the Alt key on your keyboard actually lets you get to more options in the menu bar, as well as in the menus themselves. It's a neat little time-saver; for menu options with ellipses for example, holding down Alt and then clicking them bypasses the dialogue that would have otherwise appeared and executes the command directly.</div>

Also, what configure to order options make the most sense? Let's have a look.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px;">The 11-inch MacBook Air is Apple's least expensive laptop - its entry-level system,</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px;">you get a system equipped with an 11.6-inch display (measured diagonally) that can display 1366 x 768 pixels natively. Like the 11-inch model, you can double storage capacity to 256 GB.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px;"><br /></span></div>

With their lids closed, both MacBook Air model rise barely more than half an inch above the table. Tapered from front to back, they're 0.11 inches at their lowest point and 0.68 at their highest. The 11-inch model is less than a foot wide (11.8 inches) and the 13-inch model is 12.8 inches wide. The 11-inch is lighter by slightly more than half a pound - 2.38 pounds, compared to the 13-inch's 2.96 pounds.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Both systems come equipped with 802.11ac networking and Bluetooth 4.0 support, and both come equipped with stereo speakers. Also, both sport backlit keyboards with an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the backlighting brightness. And despite the 11-inch's diminutive proportions, the keyboard is the same size as its 13-inch cousin, so you make no compromise there, either.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
All systems now come equipped with OS X 10.9 Mavericks along with iLife '13 and iWork '13 apps.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Let's start to compare systems and see what options makes sense.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: MyriadWebProRegular; font-size: 36px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 48px; margin: 48px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Maximum portability vs. more screen real estate: How much difference does two inches make?</h2>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2013/11/mbas_side_by_side.jpg?itok=yGOzYs4y" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2013/11/mbas_side_by_side.jpg?itok=yGOzYs4y" height="236" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The 11-inch MacBook Air is a bit of an odd duck: it's the only laptop that Apple makes with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The 13-inch MacBook Air and every MacBook Pro sports a screen with a more conventional 16:10 aspect ratio instead.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
This gives the 11-inch MacBook Air a decidedly more cinematic feel to it, despite the tiny size. That's the same form factor you'll find on your flat-screen HDTV, for example. The same aspect ratio used in movies. In practical use, this means that you see more width than you do height. So the 11-inch MacBook Pro generates wider, shorter windows than its 13-inch brother.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
At 135 pixels per inch, the overall pixel density of the 11-inch MacBook Air is a bit higher than the 13-inch model's 128 PPI - measurable but not huge. The net result is that stuff looks just a smidge smaller on the 11-inch MacBook Air.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Some users love the wide screen; others hate it and claim that the screen is too small. It's very subjective, so my advice is to compare both to see what works best for you.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The resolution of the 13-inch MacBook Air is 1440 x 900. It's actually the same size as the 13-inch MacBook Pro sans Retina display, but with higher resolution. It's higher-res but <em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">not</em> Retina - and that's an important distinction to make - Retina display is <em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">not</em> an option on either MacBook Air model. That undoubtedly helps the MacBook Air with its amazing battery life, but it also puts it at a disadvantage for users looking for the best-quality graphics and text reproduction on their laptop.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Having said that, we survived for years without Retina display systems - if you don't have it, you may not miss it. And the 13-inch MacBook Air gives you a decent amount of screen real estate to do what you need. If the screen gets <em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">too</em> cluttered, fire up Mission Control and create a second desktop space.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: MyriadWebProRegular; font-size: 36px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 48px; margin: 48px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Who should buy the 11-inch MacBook Air?</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
If weight and size is your most overriding factor for your laptop, the 11-inch MacBook Air is your machine. It's barely larger than an iPad Air (albeit more than twice the weight), but it's a fully functional Mac computer that can do just about anything you need it to. The 11-inch MacBook Air is also a terrific computer for kids in school and college students looking for a lightweight, flexible system.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
There are a couple of compromises you make with the 11-inch model - 20 percent less viewable area on its display than the 13-inch, and the absence of an SD card slot. But if neither of those are significant factors in what you're doing, the lightweight, tiny 11-inch MacBook Air may be your ideal traveling laptop.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: MyriadWebProRegular; font-size: 36px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 48px; margin: 48px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Who should buy the 13-inch MacBook Air?</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Of the two MacBook Air models, the 13-inch is the better value: its base configuration is only $100 more than the 11-inch, and it offers superior battery life, more screen real estate and SD card support. And before October's MacBook Pro refresh, the 13-inch MacBook Air provided nearly the perfect intersection in the Mac laptop line between light weight, performance and value.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
But then Apple updated the MacBook Pro with Retina display and lowered the price. Now there's only a $200 difference between the 13-inch MacBook Air and the base-model 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. For that $200, you get a significant faster processor and better graphics performance, a much better screen, more memory and storage options (up to 16 GB RAM and 1 TB flash storage), and better expandability to boot thanks to two Thunderbolt 2 ports and an HDMI port. The MacBook Pro with Retina display is also heavier, by about half a pound.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Bottom line: If you're not willing or able to pay for the MacBook Pro with Retina display, or if you want to save weight and don't care about the differences in the two machines, the MacBook Air is a fantastic, lightweight laptop that will get the job done.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

The MacBook Air is Apple's lightweight laptop. It comes in two different form factors - 11-inch and 13-inch. It's Apple's least expensive laptop, starting at The 11-inch model costs Rs 74,500, the 13-inch model costs Rs. 84,500 more,Rs. 99,000/-.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Base models in both sizes come equipped with 1.3 GHz processors, 4GB of RAM and 128 GB of Solid State Drive (SSD) storage. New to the 2013 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina display models, the SSD is now connected through PCI Express, or PCIe. This is a dramatically faster storage interface than Serial ATA (SATA), used on last year's systems.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
You can configure to order the MacBook Air with a faster processor, more RAM and more storage capacity. RAM and CPU speed can't be altered after the fact. SSD storage is upgradable, though not easily - Apple doesn't make the SSD user-accessible, so if you decide you need more storage you'll either have to take the MacBook Air apart or have a technician do it.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The "standard" 13-inch MacBook Pro is the next model up. It's priced at Rs. 99,000/-</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
That system is the only Mac left that includes an internal optical "SuperDrive." It also sports 4GB of RAM and a SATA-connected 500 GB hard disk drive, making it the last Mac laptop that still uses a regular hard drive, too. The processor is clocked at 2.5 GHz. Customization options include a faster processor, more memory and different storage options including a larger hard drive or SSD.</div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px;">The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display brings up the rear. It's equipped with a 2.0 GHz quad-core i7 processor, 8GB RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. It uses Intel Iris Pro integrated graphics. This year, the Retina display model is the </span><em style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">only</em><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px;"> 15-inch model Apple makes</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px;">here's a higher-end 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display worth mentioning separately - it's the only model that sports a discrete graphics chip. Equipped with a 2.3 GHz quad-core i7 processor, it also includes Nvidia GeForce GT 750 graphics. It's Apple's extreme performer.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px;">ust like other MacBooks, MacBook Pros with Retina display can be configured to order with faster processors or more storage capabilities.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px;"><br /></span>
<br />
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: MyriadWebProRegular; font-size: 36px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 48px; margin: 48px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Screen size versus display density</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The MacBook Air is not yet available with a Retina display - both the 11-inch and 13-inch models sport regular-resolution LED panels. The 11-inch MacBook Air has a native resolution of 1366 x 768, while the 13-inch model uses a 1440 x 900 pixel display.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Some quick back of the envelope calculations (and simple observation) confirm that the 11-inch MacBook Air is a bit of an oddball - it has a different <em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">aspect ratio</em>than every other MacBook model. Most MacBooks incorporate a 16:10 display; the 11-inch MacBook Air has a 16:9 display. This means that the 11-inch MacBook Air actually has a wider-looking display than other MacBook models; it's a bit more cinematic (the aspect ratio is consistent with your HDTV, for example).</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In any case, the 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air models have pixel densities of 135 pixels per inch (PPI) and 128 PPI respectively. They're sharp, clear displays capable of generating millions of colors, but they're not Retina.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Neither is the Rs. 99,000/- MacBook Pro. That model sports a native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels packed into a 13.3-inch display. It's in the same ballpark as the MacBook Air - around 113 PPI.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The "Retina display" moniker began with the iPhone and quickly migrated over to the iPad. And since 2012 we've seen MacBook Pros with Retina displays as well. That doesn't mean that the MacBook Pro has the same pixel density as, say, an iPhone 5s or an iPad mini with Retina display - it simply means that you can't make out individual pixels looking at the screen from an average distance.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In this particular case, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display sports a native resolution of 2560 x 1600 - even higher-resolution than the iPad Air. Although the screen is the same size as the regular 13-inch MacBook Pro, the pixel density is doubled - 227 PPI. The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display has a native resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels. That's about 220 PPI.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The difference between Retina display and standard display is profound - Retina displays show more detail in photographs and make it easier to read text at smaller point sizes. Obviously there's a finite limit to how well <em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">your</em> eyes work, so the best thing to do is to check them out in person at an Apple retail store and figure out what suits you best.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: MyriadWebProRegular; font-size: 36px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 48px; margin: 48px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Battery Life</h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2013/08/macbook_battery_indicator.jpg?itok=bE9z7e8W" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2013/08/macbook_battery_indicator.jpg?itok=bE9z7e8W" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
An important consideration for your next laptop should be how long you'll be able to work on it away from a power outlet. After all, carrying around your power cord with you all the time means more bulk, which sort of defeats the point of having a portable computer in the first place.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The diminutive 11-inch MacBook Air sports about 9 hours of life (surfing the web; you'll see about an hour less if you're watching videos). The 13-inch MacBook Air, which has almost a third more battery capacity, can last to up to 12 hours without needing to get plugged back in. This model currently rules the roost in terms of battery capacity.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display manages to eke out a very impressive 9 hours, despite its high-resolution screen. And the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display also manages a respectable 8 hours, despite all the heavy-duty hardware under the hood.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
You can expect the standard 13-inch MacBook Pro, with its 2012-era tech under the hood, to require a recharge after about 7 hours.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: MyriadWebProRegular; font-size: 36px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 48px; margin: 48px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Connectivity</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
All of this year's crop of laptops - everything except the $1,199 MacBook Pro - comes with 802.11ac wireless networking, or "Gigabit Wi-Fi." In practice, an 802.11ac-equipped Mac is capable of transferring data wirelessly up to three times faster than the 802.11n Wi-Fi found on older machines like the standard MacBook Pro.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
That is, of course, predicated on the availability of an 802.11ac-equipped base station, like Apple's new AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule, as well as other 802.11ac-based systems working on the same network. Otherwise your new MacBook Pro will step down to the fastest speed available. 802.11ac is backwards-compatible with 802.11a, b, g and n standards.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Bluetooth 4.0 comes standard across the product line.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: MyriadWebProRegular; font-size: 36px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 48px; margin: 48px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Expand-ability</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The MacBook Airs both come equipped with two USB 3.0 ports and one Thunderbolt port. The Thunderbolt port can be used for connecting to an external display, a RAID system and other devices (it's daisy-chainable, too). The 13-inch MacBook Air adds an SDXC card slot, making it easy to import images and movies from SD card-based cameras.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
SDXC card slots are standard across the MacBook Pro with Retina display line. They are also the first Apple laptops to support Thunderbolt 2, a faster high-speed interface that works at twice the bandwidth of the original Thunderbolt. What's more, there are two Thunderbolt 2 ports. There are also two USB 3.0 ports and an HDMI connector, so you can attach your MacBook Pro directly to an HDTV if you'd like.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: MyriadWebProRegular; font-size: 36px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 48px; margin: 48px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Operating system</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
All new Macs ship with OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" pre-installed. Mavericks, which was released in October, features some new user interface elements like tabbed Finder windows and file tagging, along with some new apps like a redesigned Calendar, and for the first time on the Mac, Maps and iBooks. iCloud integration is greatly enhanced as well, so you'll see improved workflow efficiency if you share files and data between your Mac, your iPhone and your iPad.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
But what really makes Mavericks exceptional is the under-the-hood changes that Apple has developed to improve power efficiency and performance. Laptops running Mavericks will last longer than ever before on a single charge thanks to important changes like Timer Coalescing and App Nap, features that more efficiently use the laptop's processor and conserve battery life. Safari Power Saver keeps the Adobe Flash plug-in from loading unless you say it's ok.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: MyriadWebProRegular; font-size: 36px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 48px; margin: 48px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Who should get a MacBook Air?</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
I liken the MacBook Air to a roadster, like a Mazda Miata. It looks lightweight, and on paper the specs don't blow you out of the water. But get behind the wheel and it's a completely different experience - it's lithe, nimble and a lot of fun to drive.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In the same token, the MacBook Air is a pleasure to use; its solid state architecture, streamlined with PCIe, makes it fast and responsive. For many Mac users who are surfing the Web, running productivity software, even light graphics and design work, the MacBook Air is a perfectly balanced machine that won't cost you a lot of money and does a lot.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The downside is the limited storage capacity. 128 GB isn't a lot, especially if you're a digital pack rat, and SSD costs a lot to upgrade. The inexpensive - and inconvenient - solution is to migrate content to an external hard disk drive.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: MyriadWebProRegular; font-size: 36px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 48px; margin: 48px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Who should get a standard MacBook Pro?</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The standard-issue MacBook Pro fits a niche between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro with Retina display. It also fits an important niche in the ecosystem: it's a laptop for people who need a lot more local storage space than they can afford with an SSD-equipped system, or built-in optical storage - useful if you're frequently reading or burning CDs and DVDs.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The downside is that it lacks the faster Wi-Fi, faster graphics and better battery performance of this year's models. So there <em style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">are</em> compromises.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Having said that, the 13-inch MacBook Pro remains a popular option for many Mac users looking for a good, reliable laptop with plenty of capability. Which is why Apple's left it in current lineup. If you're looking for a flexible machine with lots of storage, this is a great option.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: MyriadWebProRegular; font-size: 36px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 48px; margin: 48px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Who should get a MacBook Pro with Retina display?</h2>
<div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display is a better value than ever. The size is right for most people; the price is right for many as well. This year's crop of rMBPs are faster and more capable than ever, thanks to an efficient processor core and the incorporation of Mavericks.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
If you're doing heavy duty graphics work on your laptop - editing huge Photoshop files, editing digital video, or if you're looking for maximum performance, the 15-inch MacBook Pro is going to be your best best. The Iris Pro graphics are surprisingly spritely for an integrated graphics chipset, and the Nvidia graphics on the higher-end 15-inch MacBook Pro offers no compromises.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: left; vertical-align: baseline;">
